  1. play Miles Davis

The Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava was chosen as the featured artist for the 2001 Montreal Jazz Festival. He was given "carte blanche" to select the musicians with whom he wished to perform and the recordings from these three concerts are all scheduled for release by Label Bleu. The first in the series features Rava's regular quintet paying tribute to trumpet legend, Miles Davis.

Enrico Rava has been a major figure on the European jazz scene for more than four decades. His early association with the free jazz movement led to recordings and performances with the likes of Gato Barbieri, Don Cherry, Mal Waldron and Steve Lacy. Moving to New York he could be heard with Lee Konitz, Carla Bley (Escalator Over The Hill), Cecil Taylor and Charlie Haden. Three recordings for ECM Records in the 1970s linked him up with John Abercrombie and Roswell Rudd. Since then he has played with most of the leading jazz musicians from Europe and Europe in a wide variety of contexts.

On this live recording Rava's quintet performs five tunes composed by, or associated with Miles Davis. The unusual frontline of two trumpets, rather than trumpet and saxophone, results in fresh and stimulating interpretations of the familiar material by a group of outstanding musicians.
