Giovanni Tommaso started playing, attending the conservatory in the fifties, and to move with his jazz bass to Bologna to take part in a jam session that saw the city in Emilia a reference to this kind of music in Italy.
In 1957 he formed the Quintet of Lucca, with his brother Vito as a pianist, the drummer brother Giampiero Giusti, Gaetano Mariani Antonello Vannucchi on guitar and vibraphone, with whom in 1958 published a 45 rpm extended play tracks with four wins and the Jazz Cup, tournament organized by RAI radio.
At 18 he began working as a musician in orchestras, cruise ships, which enables him to attend between 1959 and 1960 the local jazz in New York, where he was able to meet the likes of Paul Chambers, Ray Brown and Charles Mingus. RAI played with Sonny Rollins for an episode of a Studio. Giovanni Tommaso continues his activities with different formations, such as the GT Quintet, or the Thomas / Bollani / Cat trio. He also won a David di Donatello for the music of the film by Pupi Avati But when they get the girls?. Thirty years after the end of Perigeo, in 2007 created a new group, called apogee, with saxophonist Daniele Scannapieco, Bebo Ferra on guitar, piano Claudio Filippini and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.
Giovanni Tommaso is professor of jazz at the Conservatory of Perugiae directs the seminars since 1986 Umbria Jazz Clinics.
For several years he taught regularly at CEMM (Modern Music Education Centre) in Busselton (Milano).
